Drew County owes its existence to pioneer settlers whose determined efforts transformed this wilderness into a successful community. Among these early immigrants was John S. Handly, who came here in March of 1829. He and his brother were two of the very first settlers in future Drew County.

Most of the early settlers who followed came from Mississippi and Tennessee. Drew County was officially formed on November 26, 1846, out of land from existing Arkansas and Bradley counties.

Soon after the county's formation, leading citizens decided that a new town should be built for the county seat. In 1849, a pair of early settlers kindly donated 83 acres for the town site.

The town of Monticello was named after Thomas Jefferson's Virginia home. Located at the intersection of two major roads and served early by railroads, it rapidly became an enduring commercial hub.

The Drew County Historical Museum is located in the 19th century Cavaness Home and houses many fascinating artifacts from our region's past. The museum also holds annual candlelight tours hosted by guides in period dress.
